hold tickets, it's a good one. currently clouds out there, 53 degrees at airport. we started in the 40's this morning and will climb to above-average conditions this afternoon. the average high is 67 and we should smoke into -- sneak intoe low 70's with a mix of sun and clouds. i'll be back in a few minutes to check the seven-day forecast. >> looking at news making headlines this morning. a man has died and another recovering after a shooting outside of a house party in anne arundel county around one 1:30 a.m. in the 7000 block of outing avenue in south pasadena. we are told the unidentified man suffered non-life-threatening injuries but morrow died. >> a shooting in north baltimore is a homicide investigation. investigators say officers found 18-year-old tashawna jones lying

in the 300 block of east 26th around 7:00 p.m. friday night suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. she has died from her injuries. this is no word on what sparked the violence. the shooter is still at large. a female cab driver in serious condition after a shooting in west baltimore around 3:30 a.m. saturday. we are told the victim picked up the suspects, a male and two females, and took them to the 3100 block of swann drive when, according to police, the driver was shot in the chest. detectives are investigating the incident as a possible robbery and the search continues for the suspects. and police in baltimore county are looking for a suspect after a shooting in lansdowne. they say a man was shot just before midnight in the 3800 block of mcdonald lane friday night. he died at shock trauma. police have not released a most in that case. >> another marylander has been diagnosed with fungal meningitis from a contaminated steroid injection and that raises the number of cases identified in maryland to 15. so far, 198 people in 13 states

have gotten sick, 15 have died, including one person in maryland. the latest round in the battle between baltimore comptroller joan pratt and mayor stephanie rawlings-blake has pratt suing the mayor's office to block the installation of a new phone system. this is a battle that's been going on since june, back when the comptroller accused the mayor's office of blocking a competitive bidding process. >> the 12th annual baltimore running festival is in the record books. more than 27,000 runners from 50 states and 24 countries met the challenge of a tough course. in the end, 31-year-old stephen muange of kenya clocked in at just over 2:13 to capture first place on the men's side. the two-time winner shaved two minutes off his winning time last year. 25-year-old elfneshe yado of ethiopia edged out the second-place finisher in the women's field literally by an inch and according to race officials, both will take home

top prize of $25,000. 11 news reporter rob roblin has more on the runners' accomplishments and the role of the fans. >> 1:25 into the race and elite runners were already at mile 16. no matter how many times you've seen them run, you are always amazed at how fast someone could run for 26 miles. >> it's amazing. i've done this marathon in 2006 and i died at the end. i can't imagine what these folks are going through that fast. >> i wish i were like them. it's just amazing and i'm glad i was able to see them. >> after the elite runners came the rest of the athletes. these are folks like you and i, our neighbors. the marathon is like no other sporting event. just to run a marathon is quite an accomplishment.

you're going to be talking with jennifer franciotti in a few minutes. >> yes. >> big brothers, big sisters. welcome to the studio. >> go ravens. >> captain defense. let's start down at the tropics here, it's not unusual to have a tropical system in october and we've got one now. tropical storm rafael, sustained winds 50 miles per hour, it will miss puerto rico and drift towards bermuda. it will stay away from the east coast of the united states. here on the east coast right now, high pressure anchored will keep us dry today but a storm system to the west of catch up to us but probably not until monday. you can see rain on h.d. doppler north and west of us and this will converge on baltimore in the early part of the work week. 54 degrees in rising sun at the top of the hour. the forecast today, mix of sun and clouds. approximate -- about as nice as

hundreds of die-hard orioles fans lined the streets of oriole park at camden yards to welcome back home-town heroes early saturday morning. businesses throughout the area were booming during the o's electrifying season. fans packed nearby popular restaurants and bars like pickles in downtown baltimore. bar managers say the orioles winning season was a home run for their bottom line. >> we are thankful for the extra revenue. we normally wouldn't have this opportunity in quite some time and it only builds more excitement and more anticipation for opening day next april. >> we will make it a point to deliver this thank you card to the o's organization. in the meantime, many fans are convinced, after the bird's successful run, camden yards will be the home of next year's world series champs.

>> welcome back, everyone. it is 9:17 and in our sunday business report, if you use childcare, you know how expensive it can be. richard huffman is here with a look at the rising cost of childcare. why do the costs continue to go up? >> prior to 2005, the industry, our childcare centers, were regulated under the office of childcare administration. in 2005, now it's under the maryland state department of education so with that there's a huge focus on the importance of early education, curriculum, staff development and these children being ready to enter kindergarten. >> is that every childcare

center coming under the board of edge or certain ones? >> every licensed daycare center or preschool. >> i did not know that. that means you'll have to have a certain teacher-to-child ratio and other things? >> it's always been the case but under the office of childcare was moreation, it focused around, is it a safe, nurturing, clean environment? do the children have adequate equipment and tools but now under msde, it's more curriculum focused, there are recommended curriculums centers are encouraged to follow. >> for parents, what should you be looking for when looking at childcare? >> as a father of five children and i'm -- two of them still in preschool, i walk through the hallways as a father first. does it feel good, is this a place i want to leave my

children? at the curriculum, i'm looking at staff development. all the families that i listen to after they tour come back with the same reason which is it just feels like this is a place i would want my children to be. >> where is celebrate? >> we have 19 centers throughout the state of maryland and one in delaware. >> if you have two questions parents should ask when looking at childcare, what would they be? >> i would focus on the teachers and staff development and how these centers are investing in staff development, and the curriculum. >> you have something special coming up for breast cancer awareness. >> last month we raised 1800 backpacks in the back-to-school drive and this month children are focused on breast cancer so celebrate gave each classroom a box with a value of $250 and the goal has been set for those children to multiply that and

>> good morning and welcome to "sunday gardner," john collins along with carrie engel. we do get mail on this program. >> today we have a simple question, what is pearlite used for. it's this white stuff. >> looks like styrofoam. it's dusty, don't inhale. >> it's used in square foot gardening and in mixing with heavy soil. it drains extraordinarily well because it takes water in slowly. >> takes air gaps so it's lightweight and doesn't pack down. people tend to overwater so this is healthy. >> we have big house plants that have been outside all summer but it's getting chilly in the

morning especially. >> i have a lot of these outside, palm trees, a banana. i'm scouting them for insects and trying to determine where they can go in the house with bright light and how do i provide humidity for them. >> they'll go through a culture change? >> it is, so you want to acclimate them and take them from highlight down to lower light over a couple of weeks but get them inside before we get 40 degree nights pause that makes it harder to bring inside a 70-degree house. >> if you look at the back of the leaf, cottony things there and damage on the leaf. what do we have? >> these are mealy bugs and they're sticky. that's what happens. mealy bugs suck the juice out of a plant and they're prevalent on ficus. >> you're bringing bugs inside and they'll attack anything. >> they will. best way to handle mealy bugs is

combination of insecticidal soap and year-around spray oil and this softens their body up. >> they're benign. >> they're safe to use. >> this is a -- this will kill insects, a chemical. >> but not a contact killer, where these kill on contact. these take longer. you put it on the foil and when the insect pierces the plant, they die. >> if you have a pet that chews on the leaves, read the labels, don't use that. >> plants need that humidity. this is a great tool for that if you have a lot of -- >> i love devices. >> take it away, john. >> ok. >> spray that up and you can apply a mist. you can mix insecticide in that if you want to use insecticidal soap in there.

>> clean it out when done. >> exactly. even if you want to put photoizer, but we don't recommend photoizer from november 1 to march 1. >> something you do before you go to work? >> it's harder to do it that way. it's easier to keep them together, get a great big saucer, fill it with pebbles and keep the pebbles moist. not on your best furniture. and there's these little things, too. >> these are sticky sticks. our growers use these in our farm greenhouses to monitor white fly and other insects. it has sticky material and insects will stick to this. >> like fly paper. >> yeah. and it lets you know you have them and can you collect them and get rid of them. it's a good way to monitor things or get rid of them. >> house plants are coming in.

airport, scattered clouds, south wind at 7 miles per hour. when the winds are coming from the south or southwest, it's a warmer day and that's the forecast -- mix of sun and clouds, high temperatures sneaking into the low 70's, the average high is 67. we have rain in the forecast for tomorrow. >> funeral arrangements are in place for a former state senator clarence mitchell iii who served more than 20 years in the state house, died thursday following a long battle with cancer, at the age of 72. the funeral will be held next sunday at the sharp street memorial united church on dolphin and edding streets at 4:00 p.m. reception follows at new shiloh baptist church on north monroe street. survivors of a deadly fire will hold services for the grandmother and four children who perished in that blaze. the "baltimore sun" reports that the family will receive visitors

wednesday on the funeral home on york hole. fire officials will canvass the community by walking through the community and installing smoke alarms wherever needed. the baltimore blast kicked off its golds for daniel program. players, students and members of the perry hall community participated in a soccer marathon to help cover medical expenses of daniel borowy who was injured in the shooting at perry hall high on the first day of school. the fundraiser featured six-on-six soccer games between blast players and members of the allied sports program. >> the community support today was unbelievable. people were making the trek from games they regularly play to participate. people were showing up just to donate. >> daniel participated in a game

against the blast players and his team won. he will serve as honorary captain and kick out the first ball during the blast's home opener november 3. a rhode island boy playing his last baseball game of the season had a nice surprise in store from a special visitor. mario hilario has that story. >> it came out of left field for 12-year-old kagan rodriguez. you can guess how excited he was to see his step dad after 11 months of serving in kuwait. >> he wasn't supposed to come home until next month. >> i came home on thursday. >> sergeant donald scott was part of this homecoming, members of the 126th aviation regiment returned but the family wanted to wait. >> perfect, you can catch last baseball game of the season.

day for football in baltimore. in the tropics, this is tropical storm rafael, 17th named storm of the season. tropical season goes through the end of november so it's not unusual to have a tropical storm in the middle of october but this will miss puerto rico and travel north. it may affect bermuda but should stay off the east coast of the united states. if you're going to delmarva beaches, it will kick up big waves early next week. high pressure in control of the map in the southeast part of the country keeping us dry today but a storm system to the west and warm front cutting north of us, a lot of activity around baltimore but we will be in the middle of all of it and we should have a dry day but rain in new york state, the great lakes, showers and thunderstorms in the mississippi valley, eventually will converge on us over the next 24 hours and we will have a chance of rain on monday. 53 in jarrettsville, 54 in rising sun. forecast today, mix of sun and

have to keep those folks in mind. it's a more intimate, up-close adventure with voters. >> president obama is under pressure after his last turn on the debate stage got bad reviews. >> one bad debate is losing a battle. two bad debates could mean he loses the war. i think you'll see a different president obama this time around. he's got to be seen as being aggressive but yet not overall aggressive. >> romney has enjoyed a post-debate bounce in polls and boost of confidence on the campaign trail. >> there's more energy and passion, people are getting behind this campaign. >> at a town hall without a podium and with audience interaction, the candidate's style and body language can take on added weight. at the first town hall style presidential debate in 1992, president george h.w. bush

repeatedly checked his watch, a sign some said showed he didn't want to be there. bill clinton highlighted his ability to connect with voters. one thing that can make it hard for a candidate to be aggressive is a question like this. >> can we focus on the issues and not the personalities and the mud? >> liquidities say the format could be good for the president. >> he will absolutely be able to draw from that energy, the energy of the public and the crowd. >> as for romney -- >> one of his big challenges during this entire campaign has been not being able to connect with the common man and woman and child. he's got to be able to come across as connecting. he's got to come across as genuine, as caring, as likeable. >> the candidate that makes the connection with the person asking the question is also i think making a better connection with the folks back home. >> the stakes couldn't be higher. athena jones, cnn, washington. >> don't go away. up next on 11 news, we are in the kitchen for sunday brunch.
